#### In this blog, I will talk about why Managers should stay technical, what are the benefits and how to be technically relevant in management role.

Often this question is asked, whether managers should continue to be technical?

Many of them ask this question keeping hands-on coding in mind. If so, then my answer will be a big No.

If the same question is asked keeping technical aspect, concepts, design pattern etc. in mind, then my answer will be a big Yes.

In this blog, I will talk about why managers must continue to be technical and how to use your technical experience for the benefit of your team.

---

**Perception**
Many assume that as soon as they get into management role, it is the end of being technical.

Many don’t understand that, only hands-on coding will go away from list of tasks. But things like technical concepts, design patterns, best practices etc. will continue.

Due to this confusion, many take up management with lot of dilemma in their mind.

Instead of focusing on the right way to transition to management role, only thing that goes on is, no technical!

> A brutal truth is, with lot of dilemma in mind, one will be not be able to take up management role. As a result, they will go back to being individual contributors.

If you search in YouTube, there are so many such videos where they talk about the dilemma. And eventually they would have gone back to individual contributor role.

**Being Technical in management role**
So, what does it mean for Managers being technical?

From the time I have moved to management role, I have continued to be technical.

> In my opinion, being technical for managers should be bridging the gap between people and technical concepts.

Not all team members will be equipped to take on technical challenges. So being a manager, you can help and support to face those challenges.

You can bring your experience in technology to guide the team in the right direction and make the decisions that will help to complete the tasks in the right way.

> In management role you are no more a technical geek! You are a technical coach to the team.

Being a technical coach, has its merits. You can look at many areas and build expertise in it. In a software company, as a Engineering Manager, you need to make sure,
\- the end-to-end delivery of the project is taken care
\- all the integration aspects between modules are designed correctly
\- baking extensibility wherever it is necessary
\- making sure documentations are up-to-date
\- working with DevOps team for better deployment strategies
\- making sure the development processes are continuously enhanced
\- bringing coding best practices
\- and so on.

The above list will continue to grow as the product or the project that you take care becomes more complex and more scope is added.

> By being a technical coach, you can learn several technology to solve different problems.

---

**How to be a Technical coach as a Manager?**
Following are few steps that you can follow.

1\. Up-to-date information about the tools and technologies
Keep an eye on what is changing in the tools and technologies used by the team. This information can be used for pro-active planning to upgrade tools or libraries for bringing improvements in the code.

2\. Have technical sessions to brainstorm new ideas / tools / technology
For problems which are complex, have brainstorming sessions with the team on how to approach the problem. These sessions can also be used for adopting a new tool or programming language or libraries that could help.

3\. Study about new technical patterns to solve problems
In technical world, there is no end to problems, issues and bugs. So every day there will be suggestions about design patterns and architectural patterns. A regular study on patterns that are emerging will help you to guide the team when similar situation arise.

4\. Enforce best practices for the team
Based on your experience, you can enforce the team to follow certain best practices. You can research on tools that could automate those checks and help streamline the development processes. These will help in improving quality of the work from your team.

5\. Have training sessions to the team about concepts that will help
Based on your experience, share with the team about the concepts you have learnt and how it helps. And encourage your team also to do so. Such regular session within the team will help to build a knowledge base that will come in handy.

---

**Conclusion**
Transitioning from being a technical geek to a technical coach to the team will help you to add value for your team as well as the organisation.

Being technical in management role always helps to foresee things and perform pro-actively planning.

Being technical in management role helps to add value not only to your team but also to peer teams.

Being technical in management role helps to make the right decision as you will be able to gauge the impacts.

The moment you start adding value in different fronts, then you are in the growth path in management ladder.

Happy management!
