Middle managers are vital to operations, bridging upper management and frontline employees while facing significant challenges.

Many middle managers go through high levels of exhaustion.

This is attributable to various factors related to the team, environment, high expectations, and upper management.

In this blog, I will explore the common causes of exhaustion among middle managers and offer practical steps to help alleviate it.

#### The Reasons

Below is the list of common reasons leading to exhaustion for middle managers.

1. **Lack of Support from upper management**
Lack of guidance, insufficient recognition, and inadequate resources can compound stress. Without strong backing from the upper management middle managers feel isolated and demoralized.
2. **Hiring problems**
Hiring timelines that are unrealistic and poor hiring decisions will result in extra workloads on existing teams. This in turn results in burnout of middle managers, as they are managing without sufficient skilled team members.
3. **Constant guidance to team members**
Providing constant support, training and mentorship to team members demands considerable time and energy. It will be highly stressful if managers are the go-to resource for problem-solving and direction for all team members.
4. **Excessive Reporting**
If there are many daily, weekly, and metric tracking tasks, it can become overwhelming and time-consuming. With constant oversight and excessive reporting, middle managers may experience burnout by the end of the day.
5. **Attendance to numerous meetings**
Middle managers are key to how organizations operate and often attend many meetings. If these meetings do not have a clear agenda, they waste time. This wasted time reduces the ability to get real work done and can lead to longer hours.
6. **Lack of learning and growth opportunities**
The upper management often overlooks the importance of training and upskilling middle managers due to the high-pressure environment. As a result, their skills become outdated, leading to a lack of growth. This contributes to career stagnation and diminished enthusiasm.
7. **Team dependency on the manager**
Poor hiring decisions can lead to middle managers becoming vital resources within a team. Without their active involvement, the team’s performance may suffer significantly. This situation places additional stress on the manager, as it leaves little opportunity for delegating tasks or focusing on long-term planning.

> The Strategies

Here are some strategic steps that middle managers can take, to help ease the exhaustion.

1. **Build a Team with a Balanced Skillset and Experience**
When team members have complementary skills and are experienced enough, managers can delegate tasks more efficiently, reducing their load. Performing training and promoting peer-to-peer can help achieve the balance.
2. **Learn to Convince Senior Management**
Adopting data-driven communication to request resources, make process changes, and build relationships with senior management can help you get their support.
3. **Adopt Tools for Offline Collaboration**
Adopting collaboration tools will help significantly reduce the number of meetings per day. Offline document reviews, chat-based feedback, and asynchronous feedback can help middle managers collaborate effectively without always getting into meetings.
4. **Build Templates for Easy Reviews**
By establishing a reusable format and a familiar structure, managers can reduce the time spent preparing repetitive documents. When the layout of details is known, the time taken to review documents will be minimized.
5. **Adopt Automation as a Culture**
By integrating automation tools and processes, managers can redirect their energy towards strategic and creative aspects of their work. Promoting an automation-first mindset will enable the team to seek more efficient ways of achieving results.
6. **Succession Planning**
Succession planning strengthens the entire team’s resilience and allows managers to shift focus to strategic initiatives, mitigating the stress of constantly overseeing day-to-day operations.
7. **Plan Vacations and Take Them Without Fail**
Middle managers often forego vacation due to their demanding roles. But not taking a vacation worsens exhaustion. Proper planning and delegation ensure a smooth operation in your absence. Vacations are essential for long-term productivity and mental well-being.

> Summary

Middle managers are crucial in organizations, yet they often feel overwhelmed by various pressures.

Understanding the root cause of exhaustion and implementing strategies to reduce the activities and meetings can create a more sustainable and fulfilling work environment.

If middle managers, aim to develop a self-sufficient team it will facilitate effective delegation. With a succession plan in place, managers can focus more on strategic initiatives and lessen their involvement in daily tasks.

Adopting an automation-first mindset will help the team find more efficient methods to accomplish tasks. This approach will also reduce the time spent monitoring daily operations and generating reports.

Organizations should prioritize the well-being of their middle management to retain talent and foster stronger, more effective teams.

And finally, planning vacations will help maintain mental health.
