James Clear’s A*tomic Habits* book inspires this blog.

Good habits help to streamline the skills of a manager. Building a solid routine is key to improving capabilities.

A lack of focus on habits can make young managers struggle with team management and achieving organisational goals.

Young managers will be overwhelmed with day-to-day task management if strong habits are not created.

In this blog, I will focus on the habits that young managers should focus on and create a habit loop for a compounding effect. This boosts your career due to continuous value addition.

#### The Habits in Management

The Atomic Habits book highlights the principles of small incremental changes that lead to larger results due to the compounding effect.

Similarly, the habits in management can be defined as follows.

> Habits in management are small, repeatable actions that drive progress over time by enhancing a manager’s skill to lead teams and make effective decisions.
>
> The idea of habits in management should be that it helps you to drive progress consistently so that the team’s output will improve over time.

As managers, we need to focus on short-term goals as well but to build a high-performing team you must improve management skills consistently.

Management skills can be improved consistently by taking smaller actions that are repeatable.

#### The Habits

A young manager who is fairly new to management should create habits around the following 5P areas.

The 5P habits for young managers are **P**rocess, **P**roductivity, **P**rogress, **P**erformance and **P**eople.

● **Process**
It helps to streamline operations and reduce inefficiencies.

Regular reviews of the processes will help identify bottlenecks and areas of improvement.

The operational efficiency of the team increases when the process is streamlined.

● **Productivity**
Without proper allocation of team members and maximizing resource utilization, there will be inefficiencies in the team’s productivity.

Cultivating a habit of prioritization that meets business goals and assigning ownership to team members helps to set clear, time-bound tasks.

This leads to better decision-making and holding team members accountable for deliverables.

● **Progress**
Regularly tracking performance metrics will help to understand the progress of the team goals and objectives.

Regularly reviewing the progress against goals helps managers stay focused on long-term strategy.

This ensures alignment with the business objectives by setting measurable goals.

● **Performance**
Promoting self-improvement by setting personal goals will ensure continuous learning.

For your team members, provide regular constructive feedback. This ensures team members are aware of their areas of improvement.

Celebrating and rewarding individual and team achievements will help in boosting morale consistently.

● **People**
The trust of the team members ensures goals and objectives are met consistently.

To cultivate trust, a manager must put continuous effort with clear communication to lead the team better.

Trust leads to a stronger bond, and strengthens relationships that result in team members becoming highly productive.

Habit Loop for managers

Efficient processes will help in increasing productivity as there will be reduced bottlenecks. With the automation of manual tasks, team members will be focusing on important tasks. This in turn results in reduced error hence lower rework.

As productivity increases, progress towards goals and deadlines will improve. This improves the goal completion rate of each team member. This in turn improves managers’ meeting their goals and objectives.

When there is good progress towards goals and objectives, there will be overall improvement in team performance. Defining and tracking key metrics with consistent feedback creates a strong foundation for high performance.

When there is good performance overall, people (team members) will have high morale. This will foster personal and team growth. The high morale translates to better project outcomes and aligned teams.

People with high morale will enhance processes to improve performance or productivity consistently. This is when the habit loop gets created.

This loop will make managers the best in the industry as there is consistent value addition. Consistent value addition improves the chances of growth within the organization.

#### Final thoughts

The 5P habits provide a powerful tool for young managers to manage teams effectively and add value consistently.

Here is a summary of each habit.

2. Productivity - high productivity ensures meeting goals and objectives
3. Progress - define and track key metrics to measure progress
4. Performance - consistent meeting goals demonstrates efficiency
5. People - build trust with transparency and constructive feedback

Mastering the 5Ps creates a continuous improvement cycle for managers and their teams.

For young managers focusing on these habits enables them to build essential skills, drive team success, and position themselves for long-term career advancement.

Happy Management!
