Often Managers end up giving feedback after a mistake or a delay in project deliverable or an escalation. This seems like managers are forcing the feedback to the team member.

Another common situation is team member gets disengaged long before it gets identified by the Manager or HR as they might have felt their ideas or thoughts are not heard.

And many managers focus on fixing problems instead of shaping continuous learning and collaboration.

The above mentioned situations are faced by Managers who do not follow a routine which enables managers to,
- provide feedback naturally instead during an event,
- or not providing enough room for members to feel comfortable to share,
- or not providing a clear growth path,
- or may be not solving conflicts or tension between team members.

As a resolution, I would like to propose Managers to develop People Habit which blends feedback, trust and conflict resolution into thier daily natural rhythm.

What is People Habit?

The people habit is the continuous improvement loop of managing relationships, where every interactions, feedback and conflict becomes an opportunity for growth and better collaboration.

Below are the 5 different advantages of People Habit.

➊ By turning every interaction irrespective whether it was good or bad, into a moment of learning, managers move their teams from a reactive mindset into reflective one.

Consider reading my 5P framework which provides more information about manager habits.

➋ When team members know that their manager will engage, clarify and follow up regularly, alignment becomes stronger.

➌ Instead of relying on scheduled meetings, managers will develop a structured habit to provide feedback or check-ins, or conflict resolution.

➍ When there is a continuous feedback and open dialogue, mis-alignments or mis-understandings can be caught early and resolved.

Consider reading my C.L.E.A.R framework which provides a simple framework to solve conflicts.

➎ Managers who practice People Habit will sharpen their leadership skills in terms of understanding the team better, clarity in communication and showing empathy.

Consider reading my Managers Vs Leader blog to understand more about the difference between the two roles.

Practical Implementation of People Habit

The screen capture above provides different levels of people habit for any manager. Manager should start with Level 1 and gradually move up towards Level 5.

  • Level 1 and 2 helps you to create a rhythm and structure.
  • Level 3 and 4 helps you to embed proactive growth and reflection.
  • Level 5 helps you to inject consistency into culture.

For each level there are metrics provided to help managers track the progress at each level.

✎ Managers should spend enough time in each level to make it a routine and then move up. If you rush into all levels the outcomes will be minimal or no outcome.

Final Thoughts

Managing people is not about fixing problems , it is about shaping habits that make problems easier to solve.

The People Habit turns feedback, trust, and conflict management into a continuous growth system, where every conversation, reflection, and review contributes to progress.

When managers start small either with a daily feedback moment or a weekly ins, they create rhythm.

These routines creates learning loops which helps to build a resilient, self-improving team.

And when trust and openness are measurable, managers move from managing performance to enabling people.

Mastering The People Habit helps managers lead with intention, prevent friction before it starts, and grow people in the same rhythm as they grow results.

Happy Management!
