In every organisation there are managers at various levels. They get exhausted in keeping their team always motivated and answering questions from every other peer managers.

Many organisations don’t put enough effort to take care of their managers who are actually helping in fulfilling companies vision.

Due to this, managers become less motivated and lose focus. This impacts the team and results in lower quality of work. After some time, managers somehow regain their focus and slowly things return to normal.

This vicious cycle cannot be avoided and is not going away soon. So as a manager how can you rejuvenate yourself time to time?

In this blog, I will provide 5 tips that will help you to rejuvenate yourself and be always on top of the pressure that comes with the role.

The situation

Manager’s role and responsibilities stretches to every corner of the team. Due to this the accountability of a manager is higher than anybody in the team.

And most importantly, a manager’s performance is measured strictly based on their team members performance. This adds extra pressure as even 1 non performer in the team could lead to lower performance rating for the manager.

Hence, managers tend to devote more time towards work, which in-turn results in exhaustion and lower energy as the days goes by.

On the other hand, organisation don’t put enough effort to motivate the managers nor they create an environment to rejuvenate managers to make them work efficiently.

Managers are expected to,
- keep their team motivated
- keep their team rejuvenated
- keep their team up-to-date with goals
- keep their team trained to deliver quality results
- keep their team in continuous improvement mode
and so on.

But managers are not given enough time for their own learning and career development aspects. This is the reason why manager’s role is always seen in a negative way.

I am not sure why many organisations don’t understand that they must take care of their managers by making them being part of company’s vision and by creating opportunities for improving their skills and careers.

Self solution

Whether organisation puts effort to take care of their managers or not, we as manager should do something about it and don’t become stressed out and burnout.

Here are my tips for managers to rejuvenate themselves.

Tip#1 : Take personal time off regularly
Since many managers are so neck deep involved in the team activities, they forget to take time offs.

Managers should also take time offs. The work will always be there, you can’t escape from it. But it is okay to take time offs and do something other than work.

Use this time off, either to go out on trips with family or friends or go on a solo trip or just sit at home and do nothing.

A small break from all the chaos and running around in office will definitely help in rejuvenating yourself.

Tip#2 : Create a habit
Managers are so worked up towards work, we don’t do anything else. As humans we need something which keeps us in check.

So think of creating a habit that will help you to do something that is outside of work and takes your mind off from work.

Creating a habit, makes sure that your mind is always looking forward for that time. When that moment occurs, the pressure and tension about work will just go away in the air.

So creating a habit will help you to take away your mind from work and do something that is totally different.

Tip#3 : Regular team outings
Making sure the entire team is on outing helps you also to stop for a while.

By taking the entire team outdoors will make everyone stop what they are running behind and just do something else.

Many managers don’t prefer to go out on team outings as they always fear that if something goes wrong on the outing day, it will be difficult to manage.

If you plan and inform the stakeholders ahead of time, it is still possible to take the team for outdoor outings. So, give it a try.

Tip#4 : Enrol in certification courses
All managers want to learn and grow their skills. With the help of certification courses you can do so.

These courses also will help you to move away from the day-to-day work aspect and focus on learning new things.

When you start learning something new, it will refresh your mind with new ideas and thoughts.

So, taking on new certification courses will also help in rejuvenating yourself.

Tip#5 : Learn to delegate
I am pretty sure you will agree with the tips that I have mentioned above. But you might be thinking, where is the time for all of this.

All managers have problem in finding time as they are so deep into the operations of the team.

If you want to do all of the above or at least few of them to rejuvenate, then you must learn how to delegate.

By delegation, your team members will become co-owners of the activities in hand. This will ease the pressure on you and in-turn helps to get some timeout. This extra time in hand can be used for rejuvenating yourself.

Final thought

Managers run around every day to facilitate the team to complete the given work. But forget to take time off for themselves.

Managers are also humans and need time off from work. Whether the organisation creates the required environment for managers to take a break, but you must make sure to rejuvenate yourself.

By taking regular time offs, spending time with family, creating a new habit, enrolling to certification courses will help take your mind off from the pressure of the management role.
To find time, as a manager, you must learn to delegate. By delegating, the team members will be co-owning the activities and also creates learning opportunities for them.

By rejuvenating yourself, your mind will be always be active and can lead to finding new ways to do work, which in-turn gets you the satisfaction and growth in work.

Happy management!
